Joe was born on the Fourth of July in 1899 on a small cattle ranch in the heart of the Lone Star State, born of meager means and into a family with bigger dreams than fortune – a hard working family – the eldest son of John and Mary Austin. He toiled on the farm as an eldest is expected, working the fields, herding the livestock, helping the family earn an honest, but admittedly small existence. The clever, sometimes impetuous young boy had an adventurous streak that burned inside of him, a streak that would one day make him legend, sparked when he happened upon a shimmering object lodged in the hot, parched Texas soil.

“I ain’t never seen anything like it. The Texas sun was burning hot that day, and you could feel the heaviness in the air. I knew I had to fix the fence surrounding the alfalfa field from the storms, so I saddled up and set out for what I thought would be a routine ride. Although I was only 12 going on 13 in just a few days, I had already lived the life of man – my father having passed just months prior. Near as I can recall, after having been thrown, I was out for every bit of two hours as the setting afternoon Texas sun was replaced by our remarkable starlit nights and cool, inviting wind.”
